VICKIâS HAND shook as she aimed her keys at the ignition. âLove! How ridiculous. Jamie is trying to turn every little thing I sayâor donât sayâintoâ¦â She dropped her forehead to the steering wheel. âForget about that, Victoria,â she said. âThink about what youâve done.â She backed her car out and headed toward the narrow, palm-lined street and her cottage while repeating the words sheâd just spoken to Jamie. ââWait until you meet himâ! Good God, what was I thinking? Nothing good can come from a meeting between Jamie and Graham.â
The light from her porch glowed a warm welcome as she pulled into her driveway. âMaybe, just maybe, I can salvage this situation,â she said to herself as the initial panic began to subside. âIn fact, a meeting between the two might work to my advantage. If Jamie actually sees Graham face-to-face, heâll have to admit that Graham is a potent force in my life, one thatâs not going to go away just because Jamie and Beasley have come to Fort Lauderdale.â
Settling her purse strap over her shoulder, she locked her car and climbed the two steps to her door. âBut what if something slips? What if Jamie says something? What if I do?â She stepped inside and sank into the nearest chair. âNo, this meeting is definitely not worth the risk.â
A few minutes later, she filled her kettle with water, set it on a burner and took a teacup from a nineteenth-century breakfront. Sitting at a table to wait for the water to boil, she considered another option. âMaybe they wonât meet, after all. Graham is a busy man. His time at the shop is limited.â She chewed on a fingernail. âBut then again, heâs so anxious about this opening and the container arriving from Amsterdam that lately he shows up when I least expect him. In the next week, heâll probably be around more than usual.â
A full week! Jamie had definitely said he was renting an apartment by the week. Did that mean one week? Or possibly two? No. Sheâd just have to convince him to leave town.
The kettleâs shrill whistle made Vicki scurry to the stove. She hung a teabag over the lip of her cup and poured in steaming water. The sweet aroma of lemon-scented tea wafted to her nostrils, calming her. A week. Funny. Jamieâs announcement that heâd come to stay for that length of time should have sent her spiraling to the edge of panic. Instead, the thought of Jamie living practically in her own neighborhood chilled her blood to icewater at the same time as it warmed her to the tips of her toes.
Vicki scowled into her cup. âRidiculous. If I feel warm, itâs definitely the tea!â
